What is an EV charger?

An EV charger, properly called electric vehicle supply equipment or EVSE, is the wall box and cable that delivers household power to an electric car and negotiates how many amps that car may safely draw. The actual charger, the converter that turns AC into battery DC, rides inside the vehicle. Level 1 plugs into an ordinary 120 volt outlet and adds 3–5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 runs on a 240 volt circuit like a dryer's and adds 20–40 miles per hour, which is the practical choice at home.
Where it is
Most units mount on a garage wall or an exterior wall within about 20 feet of the parking spot, ideally close to the panel, since 6 gauge copper is not cheap by the foot. There are two ways to connect: hardwired, or plugged into a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Code now requires GFCI protection on that 240 volt receptacle, and a plug-in charger carries its own ground fault sensing, which is why certain pairings nuisance trip. The circuit itself is a dedicated 40 or 50 amp breaker serving nothing else.
What it does
The EVSE behaves more like a gatekeeper than a power supply. It confirms a proper ground, tells the car how much current is available, and cuts the connection in milliseconds on a fault or an overheating pin. Continuous-load rules cap the draw at 80% of the breaker, so a 50 amp circuit delivers 40 amps, about 9.6 kW, or roughly 30 miles of range an hour. What goes wrong is mostly mechanical: a cable run over by a tire, a connector left face-down in gravel, pins pitted by repeated arcing, or a contactor that stops closing in cold weather. Charging that slows or drops out mid-session is the first symptom, and ignoring it turns expensive once a melted connector takes the car's inlet with it.
Maintenance
Every three months, run the cable through your hands looking for cuts and flat spots, inspect the connector pins for discoloration or pitting, wipe the contacts dry, and confirm the unit's self-test passes; the full pass is in the EV charger maintenance checklist and the quarterly inspection guide. Hang the cable on a hook instead of coiling it on the floor, and keep the connector holstered between sessions. Treated that way, a unit lasts 10–15 years, about as long as the car it serves.
What it costs to replace
A replacement EV charger runs $400–800 for the unit, plus $500–2,000 for a dedicated 240 volt circuit and more if the panel is full.

Do I actually need Level 2 charging at home?
Not always. Level 1 on a standard outlet adds 30–50 miles overnight, which covers the average U.S. commute with no electrician involved. Level 2 earns its $1,000–2,500 all-in cost if you drive more than about 40 miles a day, own a plug-in hybrid you want topped up fast, share one charger between two cars, or have cheap overnight rates you can only exploit in a narrow window. Run Level 1 for a month first and measure.
Will my panel handle an EV charger?
An electrician answers that with a load calculation, and the result hinges less on the panel's amp rating than on what already hangs off it. A 200 amp panel with gas heat usually has room. A 100 amp panel with a heat pump and an electric range often does not, leaving two choices: a service upgrade at $2,500–4,000, or a load management device around $300–600 that pauses charging when other big loads run. Free breaker space is the other constraint.
Are home charger rebates still available in 2026?
Utility programs are the dependable ones. Many electric utilities pay $200–500 toward a Level 2 unit, or more if you enroll in a managed charging plan that lets them shift your session off-peak, and several states add a credit of their own. Federal incentives for charging equipment have been rewritten more than once, so confirm the current rule and the placed-in-service deadline with your installer before you buy instead of assuming last year's terms hold.
