A home EV charger is close to maintenance-free, but the cable and connector are not: every couple of months, run your eyes and hand over the cord and plug for cracks, fraying, or heat damage, and keep the connector dry and clean. Confirm the breaker and its GFCI hold. A quality Level 2 charger lasts 10 or more years, but a plug or handle that is hot or discolored means a loose connection, a fire risk to act on now.

What neglect costs

The failure that starts fires is a loose or worn connection carrying 40 amps for hours at a time. A charger dropped on the garage floor cracks its housing and lets water in; a cheap NEMA 14-50 outlet loosens and its plug begins to melt, which is why hardwiring is safer for a heavy daily charger. A neglected charger that starts refusing to charge or throwing ground faults is often a $150–400 fix caught early, or a scorched panel and wall if ignored. The two-minute look is cheap insurance.

Any warm or discolored NEMA 14-50 outlet should be swapped for an industrial-grade one or hardwired, a $150–400 electrician job that is well worth it on a charger you use daily. Tripping GFCI breakers, aluminum feeder wiring, and undersized conductors are electrician calls, not settings to override. The charger unit itself rarely needs service, but if it throws persistent internal faults under warranty, let the maker handle the swap. Is it normal for an EV charger plug to get warm?

Slightly warm is fine; hot is not. A NEMA 14-50 plug moving 32 to 40 amps will feel warm to the touch after an hour, the way any hard-working connection does. What you never want is a plug too hot to hold, a discolored or melted face, or a burning smell, which all point to a loose connection or an underrated outlet arcing. If you see that, stop charging, and have the outlet replaced or the charger hardwired before you use it again. Hardwiring removes the plug, the most common weak point, entirely.

Why is my EV charger not charging?

Work from cheap to expensive. Confirm the car is actually calling for charge and no schedule or charge limit is blocking it, then reseat the connector and check the app for a fault code. Next, look at the breaker: a Level 2 charger sits on a dedicated 240-volt circuit that can trip on a ground fault or overload. Cold weather, a dirty connector, or a firmware glitch are common culprits. If the breaker trips repeatedly or the unit shows a hardware fault, that is an electrician or warranty call, not a reset-and-retry.

Should I hardwire my EV charger or use a plug?

For occasional use, a plug-in charger on a properly rated NEMA 14-50 outlet is fine and lets you unplug and take the unit. For daily, high-amperage charging, hardwiring is the safer and often code-preferred choice: it removes the plug-and-outlet connection that loosens and overheats over years of use, and it lets a 48-amp charger run at full output, which a plug caps at 40. Hardwiring costs a little more in labor but eliminates the single most common EV-charging fire point. Either way, the circuit must be sized and installed by a licensed electrician.
