What is a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker is a resettable safety switch inside your electrical panel that shuts a circuit off the instant it draws more current than its wire can safely carry. Each one is stamped with an amp rating: 15 or 20 amps on the branch circuits feeding outlets and lights, 30 to 50 amps on ranges, dryers, and car chargers. Two mechanisms hide behind that handle. A bimetal strip warps and releases under a slow overload, and an electromagnet snaps the contacts open in milliseconds when a dead short dumps hundreds of amps into the wire.
Where it is
Breakers sit in neat columns inside the panel, a gray steel box mounted in a garage, basement, utility closet, or hallway. Open the outer door and you see only the handles and a directory card. The cover behind them stays on, because the busbar underneath is live even with every breaker switched off. A tripped breaker parks in the middle position rather than fully off, which is easy to miss at a glance, so run a finger down the row and feel for the handle that is out of line. What it does
A breaker protects the wire in the wall, not the appliance plugged in at the end of it and not the person holding it. 14 gauge copper is rated for 15 amps on a household branch circuit, and pushing more through it long enough cooks the insulation inside a closed wall cavity. So a breaker that trips again and again is not broken, it is reporting: too many amps on one circuit, a hot wire touching neutral, or a hot wire touching ground. Finding the actual cause of a repeat trip beats living with it, because the bill grows the longer it runs. The one move never to make is fitting a 20 amp breaker to quiet a 15 amp circuit. That leaves undersized wire unprotected behind drywall. Overcurrent is also only one hazard: a GFCI handles shock and an AFCI handles arcing, and a standard breaker sees neither.
Maintenance
Breakers are mechanical, and mechanisms that never move seize. Switch each one fully off and back on once a year to keep the contacts and the trip linkage free, and press the Test button on any GFCI or AFCI breaker in the same pass. What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse?
They do the same job by different means. A fuse melts a calibrated metal strip and is then finished; a breaker trips a mechanism and resets. Fuse boxes are common in homes wired before roughly 1960 and are not automatically unsafe, but they invite a dangerous shortcut: dropping a 30 amp fuse into a 15 amp socket to stop the blowing. Fuse panels also leave no room for GFCI or AFCI protection, which is usually the real reason owners convert to breakers.
How many times can a breaker trip before it needs replacing?
There is no hard count, but a breaker is a wear item and every trip erodes the contacts a little. A unit that has interrupted a handful of dead shorts, or that has tripped monthly for a year, can start opening below its rating or fail to open at all. Swap any breaker that trips at loads it used to handle, resets with a mushy feel, or runs warm to the touch. At $5–15 for the part, it is the cheapest suspicious component in the house.
