Will a home EV charger become obsolete before it wears out?
It can, which is why standards are worth a thought before you buy. A charger from a decade ago might cap at 16 or 32 amps, while newer cars accept 48, so an old unit charges a modern EV more slowly even when it works perfectly. Connector standards are shifting too, from J1772 toward the NACS plug, though adapters bridge the gap. The electronics rarely fail on their own inside 10 to 15 years; more often owners upgrade voluntarily for faster speeds or a new plug type.
Does an outdoor EV charger last as long as one in the garage?
Not usually. A garage-mounted unit is shielded from UV, rain, and temperature swings, and it commonly reaches the top of the 10-to-15-year range. An outdoor charger takes that abuse full-time, so its enclosure and cable tend to age 2 to 4 years faster.
