Why did the outlets in one room stop working?

When every outlet in one room goes dead at once but the lights still work, the cause is almost always a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit that also feeds these outlets, waiting for you to find and reset it. Check bathrooms, the garage, the basement, and exterior walls for a GFCI with its reset button popped out, because one tripped device can silence a whole string of ordinary-looking receptacles downstream. If no GFCI is tripped, a breaker or a loose wire behind an outlet is next.
Safety first: loose backstab connections, where a wire is jammed into a spring hole on the back of a receptacle instead of tightened under a screw, arc and overheat, and that heat is a known cause of outlet and wall fires. Check these first
- Walk the house and press the reset on every GFCI you can find, especially in bathrooms, the garage, the kitchen, the basement, and outside.
- Check the panel for a breaker that is tripped or halfway between on and off, and cycle it fully off then on.

Why do the lights still work if the outlets are dead?
Because they are almost always on separate circuits. In most homes the general lighting is wired on its own circuit, independent of the wall receptacles, so a problem that kills the outlets in a room leaves the ceiling lights untouched. That split is actually a useful clue: working lights plus dead outlets tells you the failure is on the receptacle circuit, most likely a tripped GFCI or breaker feeding those outlets, not a whole-room power loss.
