What is the difference between a GFCI outlet and an AFCI breaker?

They guard against different dangers. A GFCI watches for current leaking to ground, the imbalance that means electricity is finding a path through a person or water, and trips in milliseconds to prevent a shock. An AFCI watches for the erratic arcing of loose or damaged wiring that starts fires inside walls. GFCIs live where water is near, kitchens, baths, outdoors; AFCIs protect general circuits like bedrooms. Both are tested monthly with their own button. One outlet is dead but the breaker is on. What happened?

Very often an upstream GFCI tripped and took its downstream outlets with it. A single GFCI receptacle can protect several ordinary outlets wired after it, so when it trips, all of them go dead while the breaker still reads on. Hunt down the GFCI, usually in a nearby bathroom, kitchen, garage, or on an exterior wall, and press RESET. Do GFCIs really wear out, or do they last forever?
