Does exercising breakers actually do anything, or is it a myth?

It is real, and electricians and breaker makers recommend it. A breaker's trip mechanism is a spring, a latch, and contacts that can corrode or stiffen if they sit untouched for years, and utilities exercise their large breakers for the same reason. Cycling a residential breaker off and on once a year keeps the mechanism limber and scrubs light oxidation off the contacts, so it moves freely if it is ever called on to trip. It is a two-minute habit that keeps a safety device from failing silently in place.

What is the difference between a breaker tripping and me switching it off?

Switching it off is you deliberately cutting the circuit at the handle. Tripping is the breaker cutting power on its own because it sensed danger: too much current for too long (an overload) or a dead short. A tripped breaker usually lands in a middle position, not fully off, and you reset it by pushing it all the way to OFF first, then ON. Exercising the breaker manually keeps the same internal mechanism healthy that has to move fast when it trips for real.

My breaker will not reset. What is wrong?

First, make sure you are pushing it fully to OFF before ON; a tripped breaker often will not reset from the middle position. If it snaps right back to tripped, the breaker is likely doing its job: there is an overload or a short on that circuit. Unplug everything on it and try again; if it holds, add loads back one at a time to find the offender. If it trips with nothing connected, or will not reset at all, you have a wiring fault or a dead breaker, and that is electrician territory.

How long do circuit breakers actually last?

A standard residential breaker is generally good for 30–40 years, roughly the life of the panel around it, but that assumes it is never abused. A breaker that trips repeatedly, runs hot from a loose connection, or lives in a damp or corroded panel wears out sooner and can lose its calibration, tripping late or not at all. Age plus symptoms, buzzing, heat, scorching, or failure to reset, is the signal to replace the breaker or have the panel assessed.
