A whole-house fan mounts in the ceiling of your top floor and pulls cool outside air in through open windows and up into the attic, cooling the living space directly on mild evenings. An attic (or powered gable) fan only exhausts hot air from the attic itself to ease the load on your AC and roof, and does nothing for the rooms below. You run a whole-house fan with windows open and the AC off; an attic fan runs on its own thermostat with the house closed up.
When should I use a whole-house fan instead of the AC?
Use it when the outside air is cooler than the inside, typically evening, night, and early morning in a dry climate, so it can flush the day's heat out and pull comfortable air through.
