What is fiber cement siding?

Fiber cement siding is a siding board pressed from portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber that looks like painted wood but will not rot, burn, or feed insects. James Hardie makes the dominant brand, which is why contractors say Hardie the way everyone says Sheetrock. It comes as lap boards, shingle panels, vertical panels, soffit, and trim, in exposures from 4 to 8 inches. The catch is weight: at roughly 2-1/2 pounds per square foot it runs about twice what wood siding weighs, so it is a two-person board and a job for a crew with the right blades.
Where it is
Identify it by knocking on it. Fiber cement thuds like stone, where vinyl rattles hollow and wood gives a sharper, lighter knock. Three more tells: the butt end of a board shows a dense grey core under the paint, joints between boards use a metal or plastic flashing behind the seam rather than the J-channel and interlocking hooks of vinyl, and there is caulk at every corner, window, and trim intersection. Boards are face-nailed or blind-nailed to studs, not hung. On the house, pay attention to the bottom course and anywhere siding meets a roof, because those two edges tell you most of what you need to know about how the installation was done.
What it does
Siding is the first thing between weather and the wall behind it, and fiber cement handles that assignment about as well as any cladding sold. It carries a Class A fire rating, gives termites and woodpeckers nothing to work with, stays dimensionally stable in humidity, and holds paint two to three times longer than wood because it does not swell and shrink each season. Failures show up at the edges, not in the field. Cut ends left unsealed wick water and swell. Caulk joints open in 5–10 years and let water behind the board. Boards installed tight to grade or to a roof surface, where code calls for 6 inches of clearance to soil and 1–2 inches to a roof, soak up water and delaminate along the bottom edge. And it is brittle: a ladder foot, a thrown rock, or a nail driven too deep leaves a chip or a hairline crack that widens over a few freeze cycles.
Maintenance
Wash the walls once a year with a garden hose and a soft brush, keeping any pressure washer under 1,500 psi and off the joints entirely. Walk the perimeter each spring looking for open caulk, and recaulk trim, corners, and penetrations every 5–10 years with a high-quality elastomeric sealant. Fiber cement or vinyl siding: which is the better buy?
Vinyl costs $4–8 per square foot installed and lasts 20–30 years with no painting. Fiber cement costs $10–16 and lasts 30–50 but needs paint every 10–15. On pure cost per year they land closer than the sticker prices suggest. The tie-breakers are elsewhere: fiber cement resists fire and hail, holds up to 130 mph wind, does not warp near a grill or a reflective window, and returns more at resale. Vinyl wins on budget and on never picking up a paintbrush.
Does fiber cement siding have to be painted?
It depends on how it arrived. Factory-primed board is bare primer and needs two finish coats within 90–180 days of installation, or the warranty is at risk. Factory-finished board such as ColorPlus shows up painted and only needs touch-up on cut edges. Either way, plan on a repaint eventually: $3–7 per square foot, or roughly $4,000–9,000 on an average house, every 10–15 years for field-painted siding and 15–20 for factory finishes.
Is cutting fiber cement siding dangerous?
The dust is the hazard. Cutting releases respirable crystalline silica, which OSHA regulates on job sites and which no homeowner should breathe in a garage. Cut outdoors, upwind, using fiber cement shears or a circular saw with a polycrystalline diamond blade and a dust-collecting shroud, and wear an N95 at minimum. Score-and-snap works for a few boards with almost no dust. Then seal every cut end with primer before installing it, since bare edges are where water gets in.
