What is an expansion tank?

An expansion tank is a small steel tank, usually 2 or 5 gallons, plumbed into the cold supply near a water heater to give heated water somewhere to go besides your pipes. Water swells roughly 2 percent as it warms from 50 to 120 degrees, so a 50 gallon heater manufactures about an extra gallon of volume on every recovery cycle. In an open system that gallon drifts harmlessly back toward the street main. In a closed one it has nowhere to go, and pressure climbs instead.

Where it is

Trace the cold water pipe entering the top of the water heater and look for a tank about the size of a basketball hanging off a tee within 3 feet of the heater. Most are blue, tan, or grey, with a threaded 3/4 inch connection on one end and a black rubber cap on the other covering a Schrader valve, the same fitting a bicycle tire uses. Some hang upside down from a horizontal run, some sit on a bracket. No tank anywhere on that line means either your system is open or the tank was skipped at installation.

What it does

Inside sits a rubber bladder with a charge of air behind it, set at the factory to 40 psi and meant to be matched to your house. When the burner runs, the surplus water pushes into the tank and compresses that air like a shock absorber, holding household pressure near its normal 40–60 psi. Without the cushion, a closed system can spike past 150 psi in minutes. That spike is what makes the temperature and pressure relief valve dribble, blows out toilet fill valves and washing machine hoses, and hammers faucet cartridges into early retirement. When the bladder tears, water floods the air side, the tank turns heavy and solid, and it protects nothing at all. A waterlogged tank also rusts from the inside and eventually seeps at its seam.

Maintenance

Test it once a year, ideally the same afternoon you drain the heater. Knuckle-tap the top and bottom: a healthy tank rings hollow up top and sounds dull only near the base. If the whole body thuds, or if it feels far heavier than the 5 to 8 pounds an empty one weighs, the bladder is finished. Press the Schrader valve as confirmation, because water coming out instead of air settles the question. The annual expansion tank check walks through it, and expected service life lands at 5 to 10 years, shorter than the heater it protects, which catches most owners off guard.

Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need an expansion tank?

You need one if your plumbing is a closed system, meaning something between the street and the heater blocks reverse flow: a pressure reducing valve, a check valve, a backflow preventer, or certain meter setups. Most homes built or re-plumbed in the last 20 years qualify, and many jurisdictions now require a tank any time a water heater is swapped. The tell is a pressure gauge on a hose bib that climbs on its own after the burner fires.

What pressure should my expansion tank be set to?

Match it to static house pressure, normally 40–60 psi. Thread a $12 gauge onto a hose bib to read it. Then isolate the tank, drain the water side completely, and set the air charge with a bicycle pump to within 2 psi of that reading. Charging a tank while it is still under water pressure produces a false high number, and that mistake is the leading reason a brand new tank fails inside a year.

Why is my relief valve dripping if I already have an expansion tank?

Three usual answers. The tank has lost its air charge and gone waterlogged, so it absorbs nothing. The precharge was never matched to house pressure. Or incoming street pressure has crept above 80 psi and calls for a pressure reducing valve rather than a bigger tank. Run the tap test first, then read pressure at a hose bib. A relief valve that has been weeping for months usually needs replacing as well, at $20–40 for the part.
