A heat pump water heater is an electric tank that moves heat out of the room air into the water instead of making heat with a resistance element. The compressor and evaporator ride in a hump on top of the tank and run the same refrigerant cycle as a refrigerator, only pointed inward. Moving heat costs far less than creating it: a good unit delivers roughly three units of water heating per unit of electricity, which is why the yellow label shows a UEF near 3.5 against about 0.92 for a conventional electric tank.

Where it is

Picture a 50 or 65 gallon electric tank that grew a bread box on its lid, standing 72 to 80 inches tall, so measure headroom before you order one. The unit needs air more than it needs floor space. Plan on roughly 700 to 1,000 cubic feet of open room (a 12 by 12 space with an 8-foot ceiling clears it), or louvered doors, or a ducting kit at $150–400. It also needs a condensate drain, because wringing heat out of humid air produces 1 to 3 gallons of water a day. Basements, garages, and mechanical rooms are the usual homes.

What it does

In hybrid mode the compressor does the heating and the old-style resistance elements fire only when demand outruns it, such as three showers back to back. The Department of Energy rates these units two to three times more efficient than conventional electric models, and households replacing a resistance tank commonly save $250–500 a year. The side effects are real too. Exhaust air leaves 10 to 15 degrees cooler and drier, which is welcome in a Houston garage and a mild penalty in a heated Minnesota basement. Compressor noise sits around 45 to 55 decibels, roughly a dishwasher. The failure most owners miss is silent: a fouled filter or an iced evaporator makes the unit fall back on its elements, and the only symptom is a power bill that quietly doubles.

Maintenance

Rinse or vacuum the air filter every 6 months, more often in a dusty garage, since a clogged filter is the top reason one of these drifts back to resistance heating (filter cleaning intervals). Once a year, flush a few gallons of sediment out of the tank, wipe the evaporator coil, and confirm the condensate line still drains. Pull the anode rod at year 3 to 5. Expect 13 to 15 years of service (lifespan detail), start pricing the next one at year 12 (replacement timing), and work the rest into the unit checklist.

Against a standard electric tank, a family of four usually trims $250–500 a year off water heating, which is where the 4 to 8 year payback on the price difference comes from. Against natural gas the math is thinner, often $75–200 a year, so the case there leans on rebates and on skipping a gas line. Check your utility first: rebates of $300–1,000 are common in 2026, while the federal tax credit that used to cover these expired at the end of 2025.

Does it cool the room it sits in?

Yes, by design. The unit exhausts air 10 to 15 degrees cooler and noticeably drier than what it drew in, which amounts to free dehumidification in a Southern garage or a damp basement. In a basement you heat all winter, the furnace makes up part of that heat and trims the savings by perhaps 10 to 15 percent. That same trait is why nobody should install one against a bedroom wall: the noise and the cold draft land in the same place.

Can it go in a small closet?

Only with help. Manufacturers want roughly 700 to 1,000 cubic feet of air around the unit, and a sealed closet starves the evaporator, which drops efficiency and can ice the coil. The two fixes are louvered doors sized to the maker's free-area spec, or a ducting kit that draws intake air from one space and dumps exhaust into another for $150–400 in parts. Skipping this step is the usual reason a hybrid tank underperforms its label.

Does it still work in an unheated garage?

Down to roughly 37 to 45 degrees ambient, depending on the model, the compressor keeps running. Below that the unit switches to resistance elements and behaves like an ordinary electric tank, so a northern garage gives back much of the savings for three or four months a year. Southern and coastal garages are close to ideal. In a cold climate, put the unit in a basement or a mechanical room near the furnace, where waste heat feeds it.
