What is an electrical panel?

An electrical panel, also called a breaker box or load center, is the steel cabinet where the utility's incoming power is divided into the individual circuits that feed your house, each one behind its own breaker. Two 120 volt legs land on the main lugs, combine to 240 volts for large appliances, and energize a pair of busbars. Every breaker clips onto a bus and taps off whatever amperage its circuit needs. Service size is stamped on the main breaker handle: 100 or 200 amps in most homes, 60 amps in houses that never got upgraded.

Where it is

The panel hangs on a wall in a garage, basement, utility room, or an exterior enclosure beside the meter. Code demands 30 inches of clear width and 36 inches of clear depth in front of it, so the shelving that grew there over the years is technically a violation and practically a hazard on the night you need the main disconnect. Larger homes often add a subpanel in an addition, a detached garage, or a finished attic, fed by a single breaker in the main. Find both, label both, and make sure everyone in the house can reach the main handle in the dark.

What it does

The panel does three things at once: it distributes, it protects, and it gives you one handle that kills everything. Trouble almost always starts at a connection. Lugs and breaker clips loosen through decades of heating and cooling, a loose connection generates heat, and that heat pits the bus and cooks the plastic around it. Rust from a leaking exterior enclosure does the same work more slowly. The warning signs are physical: scorch marks, a smell like hot fish or burning plastic, a breaker too warm to hold, buzzing, or breakers that will not stay reset. Brand matters too. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a long documented history of breakers that fail to trip, many insurers balk at writing a policy on them, and replacement is the accepted remedy rather than repair.

Maintenance

Nothing behind the inner cover is homeowner territory, but the yearly look and listen in front of it is. Open the door, scan for rust and scorching, feel for a breaker warmer than its neighbors, listen for buzzing, and confirm the labels still match reality; the steps sit in the panel maintenance checklist and the annual inspection guide. Have an electrician torque the connections and thermal-scan the cabinet every 5–10 years. Expect 25–40 years before replacement comes due, and press the Test button monthly on any GFCI breaker inside.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 amp service still enough?

It was generous for a 1970s house and it is marginal now. A heat pump, an induction range, a heat pump water heater, and a car charger together can ask for more than 100 amps of connected load, and an electrician has to run a formal load calculation before adding any of them. Plenty of homes stay at 100 amps and add a load management device, roughly $300–600, that keeps two big loads from running at once. Full upgrades run $2,500–4,000.

Which panel brands are considered unsafe?

Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok, Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco, and Challenger are the names inspectors flag, because their breakers have a history of failing to trip on a fault. Bulldog Pushmatic panels are not dangerous in the same way but are obsolete and short on available parts. If the label inside your door reads any of those, price a replacement rather than a repair, and ask your insurer where they stand before the next renewal.

Do I need a permit to replace a panel?

Yes, essentially everywhere. A panel change is permitted work with an inspection attached, and the utility has to pull the meter to de-energize the service, so it gets scheduled rather than squeezed in. Budget 6 to 8 hours without power on the day, plus a return visit from the inspector. Skipping the permit is a poor trade: unpermitted service work surfaces during a home sale and often has to be redone before closing.

What is the difference between a panel and a subpanel?

The main panel receives the utility feed and holds the main disconnect. A subpanel is fed by one breaker in the main and redistributes that share of power somewhere else, typically a garage, workshop, or addition. The wiring difference that matters: neutrals and grounds bond together only in the main panel, and in a subpanel they must stay separated on isolated bars.
