Not a direct hit. A bolt that lands on the roof or the service drop carries far more energy than any panel-mounted device can absorb, and nothing short of a full lightning protection system changes that. What the protector handles is the far more common case: an induced surge from a strike a quarter mile away that travels in on the utility line at several thousand volts. Those induced events cause the large majority of fried electronics.
Do I still need power strips if I have protection at the panel?
Yes, and the two layers do different work. The panel unit knocks a multi-thousand-volt spike down to a few hundred volts, which is enough to save motors, compressors, and appliance boards. Sensitive gear wants those last few hundred volts trimmed, so keep rated strips on the computer, the TV stack, and the network equipment. Buy strips above 1,000 joules and swap them on a schedule, because they wear out quietly as well.
Can I install one myself?
The connections are simple, two hots plus a neutral and a ground on a dedicated 2-pole breaker, but the work happens inside a live panel where the service lugs stay energized even with the main switched off.
