What is a dip tube?

The dip tube is a length of plastic pipe inside a tank water heater that carries incoming cold water down to the bottom, so it heats on the way back up instead of mixing straight into the hot outlet. It hangs from the cold inlet and stops 6 to 8 inches off the tank floor. Most are cross-linked polyethylene with a curved or slotted tip that swirls the incoming water and keeps light sediment moving. Without one, the coldest water in the house would sit an inch below the outlet where the hot water leaves.
Where it is
Nobody sees a dip tube without taking the heater apart, which is part of why it gets diagnosed late. It threads into the cold inlet nipple on top of the tank, the port with the blue ring or the word COLD, and drops nearly the full height of the shell. Reaching it means cutting power or gas, closing the cold inlet, draining the tank, breaking the inlet union, and backing out the nipple, at which point the tube comes up with it or gets fished out in pieces. The other evidence sits at the fixtures: small white or gray plastic curls caught in faucet aerators and shower screens all over the house.
What it does
Stratification is the whole trick. Hot water floats, cold water sinks, and the dip tube keeps them apart so the top 20 gallons of a 40-gallon tank stay at full temperature. When the tube cracks near the top or crumbles away, cold water enters at the top and mixes with the outgoing hot, and the household reads it as a shrinking tank: a shower that used to run 12 minutes quits at 5, and never gets past warm. Heaters built between 1993 and 1997 carry a documented run of defective tubes that disintegrated, and shards from those still turn up in aerators, dishwasher screens, and washing machine inlet filters. On a modern heater, the tube usually outlives the tank.
Maintenance
The tube has no service interval of its own; it gets inspected whenever the tank is already open. Two yearly habits catch trouble anyway. Flush a few gallons of sediment off the bottom and clear grit out of the aerators, then test the relief valve while the bucket is out (TPR valve testing). Pull the anode rod every 3 to 5 years (anode rod intervals), since that job already requires a drained tank and the inlet nipple sits right beside it. Why does my hot water run out so much faster than it used to?
Three causes account for most cases. A broken dip tube lets cold water short-circuit to the outlet, so a 40-gallon tank behaves like a 15-gallon one and never gets truly hot. Sediment on the tank floor, common past year 5 without a flush, displaces real gallons. And on an electric heater, a dead lower element heats only the top third of the tank. What are the little white plastic bits in my faucet screens?
Almost certainly pieces of a disintegrating dip tube, especially on a heater built between 1993 and 1997. The fragments float, travel with the hot water, and collect in aerators, shower screens, dishwasher inlet filters, and washing machine hoses. They are a nuisance rather than a health hazard, but they keep arriving until the tube is replaced, and they plug fixtures faster than anyone can clean them.
Can I replace a dip tube myself?
Yes, if draining a water heater does not worry you. Cut power or gas, close the cold inlet, drain the tank, break the cold union, unscrew the inlet nipple, pull the old tube, and drop the new one in. Budget 2 hours and expect the nipple to fight back. Age is the complication: a brittle tube often snaps off and has to be retrieved with a shop vacuum or a length of stiff wire.
Is it worth fixing on an old water heater?
Run the numbers on age. A $10–20 part in a 5-year-old tank is an easy yes. On a 12-year-old tank you are spending a plumber's $100–200 minimum on a shell already past its expected life and probably corroding at the seams. Past year 10, put the money toward the replacement instead and treat the failing tube as the prompt to shop, not the problem to solve.
