What neglect costs

The failure is slow, then sudden. A weep hole silts over, water can no longer escape the backfill, and every rain adds hydrostatic pressure against the back of the wall. First the wall leans, then a belly bulges out mid-height, then blocks separate, and eventually it lets go, sometimes taking a slope, patio, or fence with it. A cleared weep hole costs nothing; a leaning wall may still be saved for hundreds; a collapsed one is a full rebuild at $5,000 to $15,000. What are weep holes and why keep them clear?

Weep holes are the small openings you see near the base of a retaining wall, and they are the pressure-release valve for the whole structure. Groundwater collects in the gravel behind the wall, and the weep holes let it drain out the front instead of piling up as hydrostatic pressure. When silt, mulch, or roots plug them, that water has nowhere to go and starts pushing the wall over. Clearing them each season and after storms is the single most important thing you can do for a wall.

Is a leaning retaining wall dangerous?

It can be, and it rarely reverses on its own. A slight, long-standing tilt may be stable, but new or increasing lean means soil pressure is winning, and walls can fail suddenly and violently, especially after a wet spell. Measure the tilt against vertical, mark it, and recheck after each big rain; movement that grows is a red flag. Keep people and play areas away from a bulging wall and get it assessed. Catching the first inch of lean is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

Can I fix a bulging retaining wall myself?

Generally no, and it is one of the riskier DIY jobs to attempt. A bulge means the wall is already losing to the soil and water behind it, and disturbing it without shoring can bring the whole thing down on you. The real fix addresses the cause, usually restoring drainage and sometimes adding tiebacks or rebuilding a section, which is engineering and heavy-equipment work. What you can and should do yourself is prevent it: keep the weep holes and backfill draining so pressure never builds to a bulge.

When does a retaining wall need an engineer?

As a rule of thumb, any wall taller than about 4 feet, any tiered or stacked set of walls, and any wall holding back a slope, a driveway, or a structure should be engineered, and most jurisdictions require a permit and a stamped design for those. An engineer is also warranted the moment an existing wall shows real distress: active lean, a bulge, wide cracks, or blocks pulling apart. Shorter garden walls under a few feet on flat ground are usually fine to build and maintain yourself.
