Rust holes in steel gutters, seams splitting every few feet, or spikes torn out of soft fascia are past patching. Undersized gutters are the case people miss. A 5-inch gutter on a large, steep roof overflows in a hard rain no matter how clean it is, and the fix is a 6-inch run with larger downspouts. Why do my gutters overflow even right after cleaning?
Three causes beyond debris. Pitch: a gutter needs about 1/4 inch of fall per 10 feet toward the downspout, and a sagged run holds water instead of moving it. Outlet clogs: the blockage sits in the downspout elbow, not the trough you just cleared. Should the fascia be repaired at the same time as the gutters?
If the gutters are pulling away, the fascia already is the job. Spikes and hangers tear loose because the wood behind them softened from years of overflow, and new gutters screwed into rotted fascia sag again within a season. Are gutter guards worth installing?
They reduce cleaning rather than end it. Quality micro-mesh or reverse-curve guards run $8–20 per linear foot installed and keep leaves and twigs out, which matters most under mature trees or on a steep roof nobody should be climbing. Shingle grit and pine needles still collect on top and inside, so plan an annual check anyway. The cheap plastic screens at $1–3 per foot sag, clog, and often make overflow worse than bare gutters.
How often do gutters need cleaning to stay in repair territory?
Twice a year is the baseline: late spring once the seeds drop, and late fall once the leaves are down. Under pines or oaks, make it three or four times. The point is not tidiness. Standing debris holds water against the fascia, adds weight that drags hangers out, and pushes overflow down the wall toward the foundation, which is where a $150 chore becomes the bills in clogged-gutter costs.
