  5. Unscrew the old base and clip a clothespin or pencil across the wire bundle so it cannot slip into the wall cavity. Fishing wires back out is the part that eats an afternoon.
  6. Thread the wires through the new base, level it, mark the holes, and mount it with anchors. Land each wire on the matching letter and tug gently to confirm it seated.
  7. Snap on the thermostat, restore the breaker, and walk the setup wizard. Answer the system questions carefully: heat pump versus conventional, number of stages, and O/B reversing valve orientation. A wrong answer here is why a new thermostat blows cold air on a heat call.
