A cast-iron radiator lasts 30–50+ years, and in plenty of old houses the original ones are still heating rooms a century later. The iron body itself almost never wears out. What fails first is the hardware around it: the supply valve, the air vent or bleed fitting, and the connections that can seep or seize. Keep the water chemistry in check and trapped air out, and a good radiator is effectively a lifetime fixture that outlasts every furnace and boiler bolted to it.

Signs yours is near the end

Two things kill radiators early: trapped air and bad water. Bleeding the radiators at the start of each heating season pushes out the air that both blocks heat and, in a hot-water system, feeds the internal rust that turns to sludge. Keeping the system full and properly pressurized limits the fresh oxygen that corrodes the iron. If one radiator stays cold, it is usually air or a stuck valve rather than a dead radiator, so start with the cold-radiator checks before assuming the worst. Should I replace old cast-iron radiators?
Usually not. Cast iron holds heat beautifully and, barring a crack, lasts 30–50 years or more, so swapping a working radiator for a modern panel unit rarely improves comfort and often reduces it. The money is better spent on new valves, thermostatic radiator valves for room-by-room control, or a good bleed and flush. Replace only when a section cracks and leaks, the radiator is badly undersized for the room, or you are reconfiguring the space. A single swap runs $300–1,000.
How often should radiators be bled?
Once a year at minimum, at the start of the heating season, and again any time you feel cold patches at the top of an otherwise warm radiator. Air collects naturally in a hot-water loop and rises to the highest points, blocking heat and encouraging rust. Bleeding takes a key, a rag, and about two minutes per radiator. If you find yourself bleeding the same one every few weeks, air is getting in somewhere, and that steady oxygen is what shortens an iron radiator's otherwise very long life.
Why is one radiator cold when the rest are hot?
The three usual causes are trapped air, a stuck valve, or sludge settled in the bottom. Start by bleeding it; if the top warms up, you are done. If not, check that both the supply and return valves are fully open and the lockshield is not seized. Cold at the bottom with a hot top points to sludge or corrosion debris, which a power flush clears. A radiator that stays stone cold with open, bled valves may have a blockage worth a plumber's look.
