Why isn't my freezer freezing?
Updated August 2026
A freezer that hums along but no longer holds things solid is most often choked by dirty condenser coils or a worn door gasket, both of which let heat build faster than the compressor can pump it out. Start by vacuuming the coils and testing the door seal before you assume the sealed system failed. If the compressor runs constantly yet the box keeps warming, the trouble is usually a stalled evaporator fan or the defrost system, and low refrigerant is the last suspect, not the first.
Safety first: this is a food-safety clock, not just an appliance annoyance. A freezer should hold at 0F; once contents warm above 40F for more than two hours, perishable food is no longer safe to refreeze and should be tossed. If a chest or upright is warming, move what you can to a working freezer or a cooler packed with ice, and label anything you do refreeze so you do not serve spoiled food later.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How likely | The fix | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dirty condenser coils | Most common | Vacuum and brush the coils behind or beneath the unit so it can shed heat again. | Free |
| Worn or dirty door gasket | Common | Close the door on a dollar bill; if it slides out easily, clean or replace the gasket. | $20–100 |
| Failed evaporator fan | Common | No fan whir behind the back panel means no cold-air circulation; a tech replaces the motor. | $100–200 |
| Overpacked box or blocked vents | Occasional | Leave a few inches around the interior air vents so cold air can actually move. | Free |
| Defrost heater, timer, or sensor fault | Occasional | Frost blankets the evaporator and blocks airflow; the failed defrost part gets replaced. | $150–300 |
| Low refrigerant or sealed-system leak | Rare | Compressor runs but nothing chills; usually the point to replace the appliance. | $200–500+ |
Check these first
- Put a thermometer between packages and read it after a few hours; a healthy freezer sits at or below 0F.
- Pull the unit out and look at the condenser coils. A gray mat of dust and pet hair is the number-one reason a freezer warms.
- Close the door on a dollar bill and tug. If it slips free with no drag, the gasket is not sealing.
- Listen at the back for the evaporator fan. Silence there, with a running compressor, points to a dead fan motor.
- Make sure nothing blocks the interior vents and the door is not held ajar by an overstuffed shelf or a stuck drawer.
Prevent it next time
Most freezer warm-ups are maintenance, not failure. Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year so the compressor is not fighting a blanket of dust, and wipe the gasket clean so it seals tight. On a manual-defrost chest or upright, defrost it before the frost passes a quarter inch, since heavy ice insulates the coils and kills capacity. Our chest freezer maintenance checklist lays out the seasonal routine that keeps a freezer at 0F for its full life.
When to call a pro
Call an appliance tech when the coils are clean, the gasket seals, the fan runs, and the box still will not get cold, which usually means a sealed-system or refrigerant fault. A diagnostic runs $80–150, a fan motor or defrost part $150–350 installed, and a sealed-system repair $400–600 or more. Because that last figure rivals a new freezer, weigh it against the age and value in our repair-or-replace freezer guide before authorizing refrigerant work on an older unit.
Most of the causes above are maintenance problems wearing a disguise. OnOtto keeps the boring prevention on schedule so the 2 a.m. version doesn't happen.

How long can food stay frozen if the freezer stops?
A full freezer holds safe temperatures for about 48 hours if you keep the door shut, and a half-full one for roughly 24 hours. Every time you open it, that clock speeds up. Group packages together so they hold cold, and add bags of ice or dry ice if the outage will run long. Once food has warmed above 40F for more than two hours, refreezing it is not safe. Meat and dairy are the first things to discard.
Why is my freezer warm but the fridge is cold?
On a standard top or bottom freezer, one evaporator coil in the freezer cools both compartments, and a fan pushes some of that cold air down to the fridge. If the freezer itself is warming while the fridge stays cool, suspect frost buildup on that coil from a defrost failure, or a fan that has stalled. Heavy ice on the back panel is the tell. Clearing the frost and replacing the defrost heater or fan usually restores both compartments.
Should I repair or replace a freezer that won't freeze?
Follow the cost and age math. A dirty coil, bad gasket, or dead fan is a $20–200 fix worth doing on almost any freezer. A sealed-system or refrigerant repair is different: at $400–600 it can approach the price of a new chest freezer, so it rarely pays on a unit over 10 years old. Chest freezers commonly last 15 years or more, so a young one is worth saving. Our repair-or-replace freezer guide runs the numbers.
