What neglect costs
One frozen night ends a lot of pressure washers. Water trapped in the pump expands as it freezes and cracks the head, and that is rarely worth repairing on a consumer machine, which is why pump saver before storage matters so much. How do I winterize a pressure washer?
The goal is no water left in the pump to freeze. Run the machine to push out remaining water, then use a pump saver product, a cheap can of antifreeze concentrate that screws or squirts into the pump inlet and coats the internal seals until treated fluid appears at the outlet. Why will my pressure washer not build pressure?
Weak or pulsing pressure usually starts at the water supply, not the pump. Check that the garden hose delivers full flow, the inlet screen is clear, and no air is trapped in the line, then confirm you are using the right nozzle for the job. If the water side is fine, the culprit is often a clogged nozzle spiking then dropping pressure, a worn unloader valve, or a tired pump. Clear the nozzle tip with the cleaning wire first, since that fixes it more often than not.
Do electric pressure washers need less maintenance?
Yes, quite a bit less. With no engine there is no oil to change, no spark plug, and no fuel to stabilize or gum up, so the seasonal gas routine disappears. What stays the same is the pump itself: an electric unit still has to be protected from freezing with pump saver, and its nozzles, inlet screen, and hoses still need clearing. Electric washers also dislike running dry, so always turn the water on before the motor.
What are the different colored nozzle tips for?
The tips are color-coded by spray angle, from tight and fierce to wide and gentle.
