How do you free a jammed garbage disposal?

Kill the power, then turn the flywheel free from below with a 1/4-inch hex wrench in the socket at the center of the bottom. Ten to 15 minutes, no parts, no plumber. A disposal that hums without spinning has something wedged between an impeller and the grind ring, and the stalled motor is pulling full current against it. One rule governs the whole job: your hand never goes into the chamber, powered or not.
What you need
- A 1/4-inch hex (Allen) wrench, often clipped to the disposal itself
- Long tongs or needle-nose pliers
- A flashlight
Before you start: The impellers do not have to be sharp to injure you, and a stalled motor can lurch the instant the flywheel frees up. Turn the disposal off at the wall, then open the breaker or unplug the unit before any tool or hand goes near the opening. Retrieve objects with tongs, never fingers, even with the power off. If you smell hot plastic or the housing is too hot to touch, walk away for 20 minutes and let the motor cool before pressing reset.
Steps
- Switch the disposal off the second you hear it hum. Every extra second of stall heats the motor windings.
- Open the breaker for the disposal circuit or pull its plug from the outlet under the sink. A wall switch is not enough once tools are going into the chamber.
- Shine a flashlight down the throat and find the culprit. Bottle caps, fruit pits, a teaspoon, and lodged bone fragments cause most jams; celery strings and corn husks wrap the impellers instead of blocking them.
- Pull out whatever you can see with long tongs or needle-nose pliers. Keep fingers out, and leave the water off while you work.
- Find the hex socket in the dead center of the underside of the unit, then insert the 1/4-inch wrench. Many disposals ship with one clipped to the side of the housing or taped inside the cabinet.
- Work the wrench back and forth. It feels locked solid at first, then breaks loose. Keep going until you can spin it a full turn in both directions with almost no resistance.
- If your model has no bottom socket, lever the plate around from above with the wooden handle of a broom against an impeller. Never use a metal bar, which chips the grind ring.
- Press the red reset button on the underside, since the stall almost certainly popped it. Restore power, run cold water, and pulse the switch. Finish by grinding a tray of ice cubes to scour out the leftover grit.

What jams a disposal most often?
Hard objects that fall in unnoticed: bottle caps, twist ties, a teaspoon, peach and avocado pits, and small bones. Fibrous food is the second category, and it behaves differently. Celery, artichoke leaves, corn husks, and onion skins wind around the impellers like string on a boat propeller and stall the motor without ever getting ground. Grease, coffee grounds, and eggshells rarely jam a unit outright, but they silt the chamber and the trap, which makes every later jam worse.
The wrench will not budge the flywheel at all. Now what?
Add leverage before you add force: a longer hex key or a socket on the wrench end gives you more torque without wrecking the socket. If it still refuses, put the wrench in place and rock an impeller from above with a broom handle at the same time. A flywheel that will not move in either direction usually means a seized bearing or heavy corrosion inside, and that is a replacement rather than a repair.
