How do you lubricate a garage door?

Spray the hinges, roller bearings, spring coils, bearing plates, and the opener's chain or screw drive every 6 months, using white lithium or silicone garage-door lubricant. The whole pass takes 15 minutes and one $8–12 can. Two things stay dry: the tracks, which you wipe clean but never grease, and sealed nylon rollers, which need nothing. Leave the WD-40 on the shelf for this one. It is a solvent and penetrant, so it strips out the grease you want and leaves a thin film that collects grit.
What you need
- A can of white lithium or silicone garage-door lubricant
- Shop rags
- A step stool
- A 7/16-inch socket or wrench for loose hardware
Before you start: A torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones, so coating the outside of it is fine but touching a set screw, a cable drum, or a bottom bracket is not. Those three are technician work, every time. Unplug the opener before your hands go near a track or roller, and keep the door closed so it cannot drift while you work. If a spring already shows a gap in its coil, or the door feels like 150–200 pounds to lift by hand, stop and stay out from under it until a pro replaces the spring.
Steps
- Close the door and unplug the opener, or flip its breaker, so nothing can cycle while your hands are in the tracks.
- Wipe both tracks top to bottom with a dry rag and scrape the packed grit out of the bottom curve. Tracks guide the rollers; they are not a bearing surface, and grease there turns into grinding paste.
- Spray each hinge where the pin passes through the knuckle. A standard 7-foot door has 4 sections and 9 to 12 hinges, so work section by section and include the end hinges.
- Hit the roller stems and the small bearing at the wheel end, then wipe the overspray off the wheel face. Sealed nylon rollers get nothing.
- Lay a light pass along the torsion spring above the door, end to end, then cycle the door once by hand so the coils carry it in. A lubricated spring also rusts more slowly.
- Do the bearing plates at each end of the torsion shaft and the center bracket, plus the pulleys on an extension-spring door.
- Spray the lock bar and latch, and put a drop of graphite or silicone in the exterior key cylinder if the door has one.
- Lubricate the drive: a light coat along a chain or screw drive, spread by running the door once. Leave a belt drive completely dry, because lubricant attacks the belt.
- Restore power and run two full cycles while you listen. Grinding or popping that survives lubrication is a bent track, a flat-spotted roller, or loose hardware, not a lubrication problem.

A garage door tune-up runs $75–150 and covers lubrication, hardware tightening, track alignment, a spring balance check, and a safety-reverse test. Worth booking every 2 or 3 years for the balance check even if you handle the spraying in between. Rollers are what a dry door destroys first: a set of 10 installed is $100–200.

Why is WD-40 the wrong product here?
Standard WD-40 is a water-displacing penetrant, not a lubricant. It frees a seized bolt beautifully and then evaporates, taking the existing grease with it and leaving a tacky residue that grabs dust. Two weeks later the squeal is back and the roller bearing is drier than before. The brand does sell a dedicated white lithium spray, which is fine. Read the can, not the logo.
White lithium or silicone: does it matter which?
Both work, and the choice comes down to temperature and target. White lithium grease clings hard and is the better pick for metal-on-metal hinges, bearings, and spring coils. Silicone stays flexible far below freezing and is the only one to put on rubber or vinyl, so it wins in northern climates and for the weather seal along the bottom of the door. Either can costs $8–12 and lasts several years of 6-month service.
It still squeals after a full lubrication. What now?
Noise that survives grease is mechanical. Run through the door and tighten every hinge and track bracket with a 7/16-inch socket, since vibration loosens them over a few hundred cycles.
