Tie a bag of white vinegar over the head and leave it overnight, which is about 10 minutes of actual work and roughly a dollar of vinegar. Mineral scale plugs the nozzles from the inside, splitting the spray into crooked jets and dropping what feels like water pressure but is really flow. On hard water, plan on this every 3 to 6 months. Before you start: Hold the shower arm with a second wrench any time you twist the head off. The arm threads into a drop ell inside the wall, and turning that loose means opening the wall to repair it, a $300 to $800 job caused by one careless twist. Step clear before you flush with hot water, since the first burst carries grit and can arrive at 120°F. Put vinegar in the bag and nothing else: acid mixed with bleach or a chlorinated bathroom cleaner produces chlorine gas, and a shower stall is exactly the small humid space where that becomes dangerous.

Steps

  1. Run the shower and photograph the spray pattern, noting which nozzles are dead. That gives you an honest before-and-after instead of a guess.
  2. Rub the rubber nozzles hard with a thumb. On most heads built in the last 20 years the nozzles flex, and dry scale pops straight off.
  3. Fill the bag with enough white vinegar to submerge the whole face of the head, then tie it in place with a rubber band or zip tie.
  4. Soak 4 to 8 hours on chrome and stainless, overnight being easiest. Hold it to 30 to 60 minutes on oil-rubbed bronze, brass, and coated finishes, which acid dulls.
  5. Pull the bag off and run hot water for a full minute so the loosened scale blows out through the nozzles rather than settling back in them.
  6. Scrub the face with an old toothbrush and open stubborn holes with a toothpick or a straightened paper clip. Avoid anything metal on a plated finish.
  7. Still weak? Unscrew the head from the shower arm, holding the arm steady with a second wrench, and rinse the inlet screen and flow restrictor. That mesh catches every grain of sediment the pipes send it.
  8. Wrap 3 turns of thread tape clockwise on the arm threads, hand-tighten the head plus a quarter turn with a rag-wrapped wrench, and run the shower two minutes while watching the joint for drips.

The soak did not help. What else causes weak shower pressure?

Check the whole house before you blame the fixture. Put a $12 gauge on an outdoor hose bib: below about 45 psi, the problem is the supply or a failing pressure reducing valve, not the head. If only this shower is weak, suspect the mixing valve cartridge, which scales up the same way nozzles do. Homes with original galvanized pipe lose diameter to internal rust and never recover it. Should I just remove the flow restrictor?

No, and not only because federal law has capped showerheads at 2.5 gpm since 1994 (WaterSense models run 1.8 to 2.0 gpm). The restrictor is rarely what makes a shower feel weak; a scaled face and a plugged inlet screen do that, and pulling the restrictor to compensate just raises your water and water heating bills. Can I use CLR or bleach instead of vinegar?

A commercial lime remover works faster, usually in minutes rather than hours, but follow the label contact time exactly because those products attack plated finishes and rubber nozzles when left to sit. Never use bleach: it does nothing to mineral scale and creates a real hazard if it meets an acid cleaner. Vinegar is slower, costs about a dollar, and cannot damage the fixture.
