How often should you test GFCI outlets?

Test every GFCI outlet once a month (that's the standing recommendation from manufacturers and the Electrical Safety Foundation) by pressing TEST (power at the outlet should cut instantly) and then RESET. If monthly is more virtue than you'll sustain, put it on a quarterly schedule and actually do it: the point is that GFCIs are wear items whose internal sensing circuitry can fail while power keeps flowing: an outlet that looks alive but protects nothing. The test button is the only way to know, and a failed unit gets replaced, not tolerated.

The cost of skipping it
What skipping it costs: this one is priced in safety, not repair bills. A GFCI exists to cut power in a few hundredths of a second when current leaks through something that isn't the circuit, like a person holding a hair dryer over a wet sink. GFCI requirements are credited with a large share of the long-term drop in home electrocutions since the 1970s; a worn-out unit that no longer trips gives you the outlet without the protection, silently. The dollars are trivial: a replacement GFCI is $15–25, or $100–200 installed if you'd rather an electrician did it.
How to do it (5 minutes for the whole house · DIY)
- Find them all once: bathrooms, kitchen counters, garage, exterior, laundry, unfinished basement. Note which downstream outlets each GFCI protects (plug a lamp in and see what dies). Map it once; every future test is faster.
- Press TEST on each unit: the button should click and power should cut; verify with the lamp or a plug-in tester, not just the button feel.
- Press RESET to restore power.
- Any unit that won’t trip, won’t reset, or has a dead/red indicator light per its manual: replace it.
- Newer self-testing GFCIs (standard since ~2015) check themselves and lock out at end-of-life; they still deserve the manual button press on your schedule.
- While testing outside: flip open the in-use covers and check for corrosion or water intrusion.

The TEST button clicks but my lamp stays on. Is that a fail?
Yes, a definitive one. The click is just the mechanism; if power keeps flowing, the unit is no longer interrupting and must be replaced. The reverse case matters too: if a tester's own GFCI-test button doesn't trip the outlet but the outlet's built-in TEST does, the outlet may be miswired (no ground) rather than broken; a plug-in receptacle tester ($10) tells those cases apart.
One GFCI trip killed three other outlets. Why?
By design: a single GFCI receptacle protects everything wired downstream of it, which is how one bathroom GFCI often covers the other bathrooms' plain-looking outlets. It's also the answer to the classic mystery of the dead outlet with no tripped breaker: somewhere upstream, a GFCI (often in the garage or behind boxes in a bathroom) is sitting tripped. How long do GFCI outlets last?
Roughly 10–25 years, with heat, humidity, surges, and outdoor exposure at the short end, which is why the test exists instead of a replacement calendar. Do I need GFCI and AFCI both?
They protect against different failures: GFCI against current leaking to ground (shock/electrocution; wet locations), AFCI against arcing in damaged wiring (fire; living areas and bedrooms, required in new construction). Dual-function breakers do both. For an older home, adding GFCI protection at wet locations is the cheap, high-value retrofit; AFCI comes up naturally at panel or circuit work.
