How do I know it is the resin and not the control valve?
Start with a hardness test right after a regeneration. If the water is still hard immediately after a full regen with plenty of salt, the resin has likely lost capacity. If softening works right after regen but fails partway through the week, the problem is more often a valve, timer, or metering fault. A softener tech can measure resin capacity directly; brown or crumbling beads pulled from the tank are a clear sign the bed is done.
Does the type of softener salt affect how long resin lasts?
Salt quality matters more for the valve than the resin itself. Cheaper rock salt carries sediment and impurities that muck up the brine tank and valve, while cleaner solar or evaporated pellets run cleaner. What actually shortens resin life is chlorine and iron in the incoming water, not the salt.
