  5. Change one damper, wait a day, and judge comfort before touching the next; over-closing a run starves the blower.

How do I tell whether a damper is open or closed?

Look at the lever or handle on the duct. When it lines up parallel with the run of the duct, the blade inside is open and air flows freely; when the lever sits crosswise, the blade is closed. Many levers carry a small stamped arrow or an open and closed label. If you are unsure, move it while the blower runs and feel the airflow change at the registers downstream.

Should I just close vents in unused rooms instead?

Go easy on that. Closing a couple of registers is fine, but shutting many of them spikes duct pressure, which increases leakage, can freeze an AC coil, and strains the blower. Dampers on the trunk lines are the designed way to redirect air by zone. If whole floors are uneven, balance at the dampers rather than starving the system one register at a time.
