What is the difference between an air handler and a furnace?

Both move air through your ducts, but a furnace burns gas, or uses electric elements, to heat that air, while an air handler holds only a blower and, usually, an evaporator coil and relies on a heat pump or AC for the temperature change. You will find an air handler with a heat pump or an all-electric system; you will find a furnace where there is gas heat. They occupy the same spot in the system, which is why people confuse them, but the air handler has no burner or heat exchanger to fail.

Why is my air handler leaking water?

The usual culprit is the condensate drain. As the coil cools, it sheds water into a pan that drains away; when algae or dirt clogs that line, the pan overflows. Clear the drain line, check that the pan is not cracked or rusted, and confirm the unit is level. A frozen coil from a dirty filter or low refrigerant also drips heavily as it thaws. An attic handler that leaks can rot ceilings below it, so the leak checks are worth running promptly.

Should I replace the air handler when I replace the AC?

Usually yes, and often you must. The outdoor condenser and indoor coil are engineered as a matched pair, rated together for efficiency and refrigerant type.
